I was there on a business trip on June 11, 2007. First I had to wait 20 minutes until the receptionist showed up. Then she programmed the key incorrectly, and I had to go back to get it reprogrammed. But the worst was that I got a room without an outside window!!! I slept already in hundreds of hotels, but this never happened to me before.

I had some significant problems with Hawthorn Suites in Rome, Georgia, but even without the major problems, I'd have to rate this place "not worth it." It is sad to see such potential in this place and then have the management, staff and physical facility fail in in such a way that you can’t accept it as suitable lodging. There's some pro's but also some real con's. And, yes, I read the reviews before I made reservations but thought the negatives were subjective and would not apply to me.
My major problem was the way these folks mishandled my reservation. I had booked a two-week stay, but somehow they only booked me for 2 days, not 2 weeks, and turned me out on the street rather abruptly. I am not going back.
The Situation: renovated factory in town's old industrial area turned into what-was-to-be a charming riverside collection of shops, hotels and restaurants. But the vision has failed to materialize. The hotel decided to keep the refurbished look with exposed brick and old refinished pine floors, paint shows in the dents and cracks.
Cons--
Expensive! Much too expensive for what you get.
The renovation of the old factory failed to include sound proofing, floor leveling, convenient elevators and stairs.
You will indeed hear the conversations in other rooms late at night. It is very noticeable.
There are no stairs or elevators inside the hotel. These are in what looks like an added-on fire escape. The stairs are strictly industrial and the elevator is slow, small, makes noise and stutters as it moves along. It is a definite chore requiring physical strength getting your things upstairs to your room.
And if you are on the side facing the street you will indeed hear the traffic noise and the sirens of emergency vehicles all night.
Don’t go here if you want, or need, to use the internet! The service is wireless, the signal strength was so low that I couldn't get an IP address. I did get a strong enough signal once but the speed was about the same as a telephone line, so slow nothing would load. Then I lost the signal. It is not "high speed" internet service. The staff have not a clue about how to help you and are evidently unaware that the supposed help line number you are given doesn't have enough digits in it to make a bona fide telephone number either.
It has no restaurant as advertised. The lower floor has a hair salon, a small dress shop, and a cookware and kitchen knicknack shop. The advertised restaurant closed up some time ago, the kitchen shop is moving out, and the dress shop looks deserted. It is depressing to see this slow decay of what-could-have-been.
TV channel selection is a bit goofy. Three foreign language channels, including a 24/7 Japanese language channel, and some stuff I’ve never seen before.
Parking is less than sufficient.
This place is almost impossible to find unless you stop and ask for directions. The lady at the local dry cleaners was the one that helped me. Be careful of the one-way, one-lane alley-like streets that lead up to the place, too.
At these prices, you’d expect some decent coffee or such to be available in the lobby. It is not.
The refurbished look doesn’t quite come off as charming, instead it is slightly depressing. Bright lights in the darkened corners would help quite a bit.
Pros--
The size of the two-room suite is the most positive feature of this otherwise dreary picture. Comparing it to a Courtyard Marriott, the suites feel quite roomy, the furniture is more comfortable and there is more of it.
Good beds, better than average televisions, 27-inch Toshibas.
The kitchenette is fully functional with a full size refrigerator, a small stove, garbage disposal.
Bathroom is larger than some hotels and has a full sized sink vanity.
Rooms have large windows letting in a lot of light and giving a warm feeling to the room.
The rooms are clean.
They have a free breakfast, the ladies who prepare the food scramble real eggs and do a good job of it.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Falls short of being worth it especially considering the price. You can go here for the better-than-average rooms, but I’d stay away from it if I were you considering the drawbacks. The place comes off as slightly depressing. Significant elements that would make this a suitable lodging are missing. There is other lodging in town.

The hotel was very neat and clean. Loved the restoration work! Yes, you might hear creaking floors but we couldn't hear neighbor's conversation.
The beds are the best, really like the hotel, it is a little pricey but...... The service that I was given was great.
The only negative remark would be about the restaurant next door. I've been there a dozen times, each time is worse than the time before. I think that they are under new management now. I hope that it will be better. On one occasion the chef was also the waiter, we had the best service and food of all the trips. He was the best.
Please ask to be on the back side near the river. The car noise can sometimes be a little loud, and the dumpsters at 5:00am are maddening.

We stayed at this hotel in May 2005. The gentleman that took the reservation referred to this hotel as the "Flagship Hotel". He made it sound phenomenal. The Rome chamber of commerce advertises this as a "new hotel". It appears that the "building" is a renovated old factory or warehouse. The elevator was outside of the actual structure, probably added at a later date. We normallly frequent Mariott Courtyard type hotels. For a price of $116. plus tax, I was very disappointed. The room was very clean, the bathrooms were quite small and it had a tiny kitchenette, again, every thing was very clean. The hotel was mostly empty, but we had to request extra towels and washcloths. The flooring appeared to be wooden floors (under carpet), likely the original factory floors. We could hear the person in the room next door walk around. We could hear every word spoke in the room next door. The oddest thing was the floor was quite slanted, you could feel yourself leaning in certain spots in the room.. The buffet breakfast was rather limited in choices. The staff was nice.
Charming & historic

The Hawthorne is Rome is an absolute treat. It's located right in the heart of the very attractive downtown area, and on the bank of one of the three rivers. It is an old converted warehouse facility and has the original flooring and exposed brick in the rooms. They built a few shops in the lobby area that really add to the charm of the building.
The rooms were clean and nice, staff was friendly and competent and the food choices were great. (It's walking distance from lots of great local restaurants and shops.)
Overall - great town, great hotel. We'd definitely stay again.
