We found this hotel listed in a travel book. I was dying to go horseback riding in the Camargue. I had missed it every time I had been to France, including living there for a year of University studies. Now traveling with my husband and 3-year old son, I had the time and money for the diversion. The woman, possibly the owner, who answered when I called for a reservation was very kind, helpful, and spoke perfect English. She made great suggestions even of things to see along our drive there from Avignon. Unfortunately, it never stopped raining through most of our trip (it rained every single day we were there for 2 weeks, so beware if traveling in the Spring) to go horseback riding, or to even enjoy the Auberge surroundings. I imagine in nice weather, it would be a spectacular hideaway for birdwatching and relaxing in a quiet environment. The rooms try to feel quaint and rustic, almost cabin-ish in a nice way. It's not quite 4-star feeling, but I'm used to France by now to not expect things to have an American 4-star "perfection" that one might expect here in the states. There were small canals around the rooms with wild birds to watch, and the road in and out in both directions provided the scenery we expected of the native white horses, black bulls, and wild flamingos wading in the marshes. It was spectacular. As for the hospitality, when we arrived at the front desk a little muddy and wet from our insistence on sightseeing despite the rain, we were given a bit of a snobby "up and down" look. Probably being from California and thus looking quite casual in dress compared to the more conservative European look may have added to the judgmental look on the receptionists face. Despite her trying to be polite, you could see that we didn't personify the typical 4-star customer. We brushed off the cold reception, having lived in France and knowing how the French are, and went to our room to rest. We grabbed a beer from the mini fridge and sat on our back patio to enjoy some down time while our 3-year old napped, and it was a beautiful site if you are a nature lover, wild birds flying and swimming through the canals. A gourmet dinner is included with the room, which i have to say was one of the 2 best mealsof our entire trip. Again we were greeted with a cold look and escorted to the back room where we were literally seated with the flamenco band that was eating before performing, possibly again due to being in our nicest jeans and dressy shirts, but no match for the rest of the Europeans in the dining room dressed in suits, even ties, and their fine Gucci handbags, etc. We actually were a bit relieved to be in the back room so our 3-year old son didn't disturb the other guests. The waitress insisted on trying to make me understand the menu in French (learning the food was always my worst aspect in learning to speak French, all the obscure cuts, sauces, preparations, etc.), only to finally have her explain it in perfect English, which she could have done from the start. Very Parisian feeling, this place. But when the food arrived...ohmygosh was it fabulous. All from fresh local ingredients, my fish soup was to die for, as was my husbands "black bull" steak, which has much more flavor than our castrated steaks here in the states. The wine, desert, everything was amazing. And the Spanish-infused flamenco dancing and music was a fabulous topper to the incredible meal. Overall, this place is pretty pricey, but the dinner is worth it and the room very quaint in a rustic way, although I hope you find the weather better than our muddy, gloomy 24 hours in the region. We didn't get to do much other sightseeing except by car, as it was even more wet the next morning when we awoke. The continental breakfast was average. There is plenty as far as variety to choose from, but the room was too small to accommodate all the guests, and we were left standing in the crowded room looking at people to see if they were finishing, and they all pretended we weren't there waiting for a place to eat (even with a small child in tow) and sipped their coffee and conversed in typical French style, not caring at all whether we would get our food and have a place to sit to eat it before breakfast hours were over. Finally with about 5-10 minutes to the end of breakfast time, people began leaving and we scrambled to grab what was left to eat and sit at a dirty table we had to clear ourselves, despite the wait staff watching us bring the dirty dishes of the people before us all the way into the back kitchen. We had to ask for more clean dishes to eat from. The whole breakfast experience was a bit odd, to say the least. Overall, this place would be a great experience if you can disguise yourself a bit into fitting into the more upscale French scene, or not care what people think. The food is almost worth it alone. Although it was our stay here that prompted my husband's remark (this was his first visit to France): "forget France...let's go back to Spain!"

Auberge Cavaliere is very nice located between two etangs. Very welcoming staff, very nice and well maintaind pool area.
Breakfast was okay, nothing special but anything you want as a continental european.
Dinner was in a very nice and exclusive atmosphere around the pool area or in the patio, excellent kitchen, friendly, efficient and welcoming staff. Many families with children, nice to watch the beaver in the Etang at dinner.
The room itself was large, harmoniously furnished, very nice view, good a/c but a little minimalistic (really small TV), no paintings. Bathroom was large, a bit dated but clean.
All in all I would give them 3 stars but it's a special experience. Just sit on your private terrasse in the evening, have a look into the thousand stars and enjoy the personal space you have in this hotel.

from website - looked v.good kept mentioning the rooms being traditional camargue huts - but disappointed on arrival to be given a room more like a motel in a block of 10+ with parking outside. Managed to get moved to hut - but the accomadation was certainly not 4 star - basic fitting etc.
As for the resturant forget it - the menu was choice of 2 starters, 2 main courses, dessert/cheese. no carte.
in general more like an 'up market butlins' than a good french 4 star hotel. loads of kids
having been at the moulin de lourmarin the night before this was quite a shock.

In our view, this is definitely one to miss. Descriptions on the internet (on various sites) sounded great. You get your own private thatched hut, which was comfortable, though not 4 star. There was a pungent smell of stale water. However, we were reasonably happy until the evening - when we discovered we had our own complimentary bat in the room, swooping around while we were getting ready. The hotel seemed to find this hilarious and promised to remove it while we had dinner. It was then that they told us the restaurant was shut that evening. When we returned from the town by car at around 10.45ish we had been locked out of the hotel compound, having not been told anything about locking up times. My fiance had to scale the gate and get help (not from staff who were nowhere to be seen). That night we were woken up by the bat circling the room. We were meant to stay 2 nights but left the next day, no offer was made of a reduction to the rate for the day we stayed. All I can say is, if Basil Fawlty has a French cousin, this would be a great place for him to set up!! Perhaps we had a bad experience, but certainly one we won't be repeating....
