Great central location - we could walk everywhere we needed to go. The rooms we were given (3 single travellers) were dreadful. They stank of smoke and one was uninhabitable due to being above the kitchen and the smell of food was overpowering. The rooms themselves were like something time forgot. I seem to remember sticking to the carpet. Extremely depressing. We asked to be changed and the staff could not have been more helpful. Admittedly we would have liked to have moved that day but they told us to pack out bags in the morning and they would move everything for us. They obviously get asked this a lot as they didn't question it. They did move us the next day into the refurbished rooms and they were fine. Not outstanding but not bad at all. Breakfast was poor by business hotel standards but quite edible. Would stay there again if the price was right and I could guarantee a refurbished room.

The Regina is great!

We stayed in the Hotel Regina the last part of our stay, and wished we had stayed there the whole time!
The rooms are clean, with a lot of character. You are within walking distance of most sights and museums. The double decker bus stop is just across the street. Also, the price was right.
I was most impressed by the front desk staff. They were so accomodating and spoke English fairly well. We were inquiring about transportation back to the airport and mentioned the cost of the cab, when we arrived. The gentleman at the front desk informed us that we were over charged by about 65 euros (beware of the cab drivers). He felt bad, so he gave us both a free breakfast buffet and arranged a cab for our trip back to the airport.
I strongly recommend this hotel. We were really pleased.
Hotel Regina - Just Ok

We stayed here in October for 3 nights and found that the location was very good. The breakfast was also fine but the double room was very small and cramped with well worn carpets. It was also gloomy as it looked onto a back yard type of space. Hotel staff were quite indifferent. I asked to book a transfer to the airport and to check back to have it confirmed, It wasn't so I had to request it again the next morning, then to find the company were booked out, so we had to book a taxi at much higher rates. I had forgotten my phone charger and asked for one for a few hours, one man at reception said he had none but a second man came forward to offer it....it seemed to depend on who exactly was on reception. Generally not helpful.
All in all, I wouldn't return to this hotel. On a good note, shopping in Madrid was very good especially for nice leather shoes!
Close to Retiro Park

This large hotel is in a great location. You can walk to world famous art galleries in twenty minutes; it's close to the subway and the very lovely and wonderful Retiro Park. Thick trees line the main boulevard. Three different double-decker open topped tourist bus lines run through the city, the leaves literally traveling just feet above your head . . . wonderful enchanting tours of Madrid. At nighttime the same lines give entirely different impressions - you can get on and off the buses at will. Retiro Park is quite immense, with a lake and places to relax and have lunch at. The hotel rooms are cozy and expensively decorated. The only negative I would share is that Spaniards are often extremely formal. You can be lost in the beauty of Madrid but have a hard time getting anyone to engage you in conversation. The longer you stay in one place, they will begin to befriend you, but you must be patient, if that is one of your goals. Another traveler had thousands of euros ripped off from their hotel room at this site, so if I stay here again, I will not use the safe nor leave my money in my suitcase. Each floor of the hotel has quirky art, just off the elevator or stairs. Lots of statues and unusual art adorning the large buildings of Madrid.

Be very careful!!!

I've stayed in this hotel 4 years ago, and found it really perfect!!! Location is excellent, rooms very comfortable.. so, I was really enjoyed my staying there, that is why I decided to choose Hotel Regina again for my visit to Madrid this March.. but it was a real mistake!! Please, think twice before book this hotel... I was there with my friends, so we booked 2 DBL rooms, and everything was OK till the last day, when we found that our money and other personal things were stolen from our rooms!!!!! Totally they took 2500 Euro (all cash that they found in both rooms) and fotocamera....The safety boxes doesn't worked in both rooms, and when we asked on the reception to repair it, thay said us, that they will do, but they didn't.... that is why we kept our money in our locked (!) suitecases!!! And finally our money disappeared....No doubt, that it was somebody from the hotel staff, who has an access to the rooms. When I told everything to the hotel manager and asked him to help us, and find out who could "visit" our rooms, he was terribly rude with us, he strongly "reccomended" us to go to the police, but he personally will not do anything, and also he said us, that we lost our money somewhere, and now trying to blaim him!! Of course, now it's impossible to get back our money and do something.. but please, do not make our mistake and choose another accommodation.... otherwise you could pay much more for your staying at the excellent 3*** Regina Hotel in Madrid!!!
