Working stay
Guest name: petmad, newport
Recently stayed at St Davids park with work on a two day course.
The room i was allocated was ok but the bed was a mattress placed onto a base which looked like it could be pushed up and put into a cuboard? Which i thought was very strange?
I managed to pop to the gym whilst I was staying here and it was tiny with only about 8 machines and 1 tredmill all of which seemed very used and needed replacing, Also the room was boiling I think the air con had broken down!
The food was quite tasty and unusual like "ice soup" and bubblegum icecream!

Having stayed at the Devere Carden Park last year we wanted to return again this year as we enjoyed the hotel so much. However Devere would not offer any special promotions and wanted ?230 for 1 nights b&b which we felt was extortionate so decided to try St Davids Park instead.
This was our first mistake, it's not a patch on Carden Park. We were there for a weekend away but it doesn't feel very relaxing because of it's setting. The interior of the hotel looks worn and in need of TLC. We have 2 small children so we were in a family room, this was basically a normal room with a sofa bed in it (small!). The carpets, bathroom and wallpaper were all in need of refurbishment. The sofa bed was stained and when it was pulled out the gap behind the bed part revealed sweet wrappers and crisps which looked like they had been on the floor for some time.
We did not have dinner in the hotel as we were near Cheshire oaks, visiting the Blue planet aquarium, we decided to eat at TGI Fridays.
When we got back to the hotel there was obviously a wedding in full swing. The sofa bed had been made up as we requested but the room was very hot. All was well until 3.40am when the wedding guest started to return to their rooms which appeared to be located all around us. It was very noisy and continued til around 4.30am, also non of the doors close quietly so you can hear every body going in and out of their rooms.
The breakfast the following morning was reasonable and everything was replaced quickly and the dirty plates were cleared quickly from the table.
We spoke with reception re the problems we had encountered and they sympathised but did not offer to reduce the ?119 for 1 nights stay we were charged. All in all we would not return to this hotel and would rather stay at Carden Park and pay the difference.

We stayed at this hotel at a laterooms rate of ?69 for DB&B, we couldn't quite believe how cheap that was and therefore were not expecting anything very special. The staff were helpful and friendly, we were put into a room by the lift which was slightly noisy so we asked to be moved, we enquired how much it would be to upgrade our room and told we could do it for ?20, well we jumped at the chance and were rewarded with a suite with a four poster bed, lovely. The leisure facilities were adequate but could do with a facelift as they're looking a bit tired. The restaurant was fantastic, they have had an AA rossette for 3 years running and you can see why, the food was superb at dinner and the breakfast was lovely too. All in all a good stay

I had a two night stay whilst working nearby on business. I have stayed at the St Davids on at least two occasions before, and so was aware that it wasn't the best property in the De Vere estate, but chose it because of the convenient location.
I am afraid this stay did not do anything to improve my opininon, and next time I will look for somewhere else.
I booked a standard room which was more than adequate in size, and had a good big bed. Regrettably I did however experience the following problems with the room - firstly the walls were paper thin - I could hear everything that was going on in the next room, including the baby crying at various hours of the night. Surely the basic purpose of a hotel is facilitate a good nights sleep - I hadn't experienced this problem at St Davids before, so I assume that it was the design/construction of the wing where my room was located causing the problem. The internet connection (which is free) in the room stopped working after about an hour - this was not a major problem and was fixed within a hourt but was annoying nonetheless. There was also a sticky substance splashed over one of the walls.
As I was working in the room I decided to order room service - but there was no menu, and I had to call reception to have them bring a menu to the room - this was a poor quality photo copied A4 sheet. I ordered the fish and chips for ?10.45 with onion rings at ?2.95. The meal left a lot to be desired - i.e. the batter on the fish and onion rings was burnt, frozen chips, mushy peas cold, and only one sachet of ketchup on the condiment tray - this just seems like penny pinching.
Having been woken by the crying baby yet again, I had a good breakfast in the dining room.
The following day I arrived back at my room intent on getting some work done and watching some TV. This plan soon folded when the TV wasn't working (it was fine the night before). I called the front desk who sent somebody quickly, who then sent somebody else (as far as I could tell he was a local handyman not employed by the hotel). To cut a long story short the TV wasn't repairable and I spent the evening with no TV - apparently they didn't have a spare, and all rooms were booked so I coudln't be moved. The further downside of this was that I had to listen to the TV's from each adjacent room blaring through the paper thin walls all night.
To cause further problems I also discovered that the chair in my room was broken (I cut my finger on it the split wood), and that the standard lamp in the room wasn't working, although I repaired this myself rather than call out the local handyman again! The chair was replaced promptly by housekeeping.
Room service again - ?13.50 for a passable (but cold) chicken korma, although the onion rings were undercooked this time.
I complained to the Manager, who unfortunately did not come and see me in person, but sent a very nice lady. After outlining my problems I was offered a 50% discount on both nights accommodation (not really bothered as I don't pay the bill)
Another interupted nights sleep because of crying babies.
In summary St David's Park has the potential to be a good intermediate class business hotel. It does many things well - including the health club, breakfast, free internet and polite staff etc. It is however seriously let down by other factors such as overpriced and poor food, poor housekeeping standards, thin walls and just not getting the basics right.
They are clearly trading on the De Vere brand, but if they keep this level of performance, I am afraid that the brand will be seriously devalued - I will think twice about booking with them again.

We had a great stay from the moment we arrived.. We booked a suite with a lovely four poster bed and large plasma screen tv. The comfort and decor of the room was a very big plus.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The leisure facilities, sauna, steam room pool etc were excellent and we were very relaxed.
The quality of food was also good if a little expensive. A very enjoyable and memorable stay.
Great for a quick romantic getaway with a touch of luxury and pampering. Recharge those batteries and feel human again.
