I bbooked the Chelton Hotel for my Husband's 30th Birthday. The description mentioned 50 rooms in a nice location therefore I thought it would be a nice queit hotel. I wasn't wrong. We arrived at 10.30pm and the gentleman at Reception said "HI.....Room 34". No menion of breakfast times, whether we had a nice flight, facilities and service available. As we were tired, we thought nothing of it. The descriptionmentioned air conditioning but when we got to the room, it was absolutely roasting with the huge window, slightly opened. Although i specified a non-smoking room as my Husband is a chronic asthmatic - we had a room that reeked of cigarrettes. The toilet was very crammed, although the bathroom was adequate. The soaps and body wash were not very good quality for a 4star. On Saturday evening, we decided to have a drink at the bar, which stated in the literature in the room that the bar is open everyday till 11pm. The bar was cllosed and it was 9pm. we asked the very unfriendly and rude reception lasy when it will open and she responded with "its closed today". I also asked her if there was air conditioning, to which she replied"what's your room number?....It's on now", which we couldn't believe? No one had even bothered to ASK us if we required air conditioing and it was 30+degrees outside. The surprise 30th birthday celebration for my husband was not spoily as we spent most of our time exploring the city, but the "hotel" certainly let us down.
I would not recommend this Hotel to even a student travelling ona budget.

I read some good and some very bad reviews of this hotel before deciding to make a reservation anyway. My own experience is rather mixed. The hotel is in need of renovation, but it isn't rundown. The place wasn't very clean; some of the basic furniture is not in working order anymore. Airconditioning was not functioning. Email was not working, and nobody could figure out how to restore it. More importantly, however, it was impossible to get warm water. After running water for 5 minutes, I managed to get luck-warm water. Overall, a very disappointing experience. It's a shame, because the buidling is structurally sound and well located.

Total rip off.

The Chelton is a run down narrow street apartment turned into a hotel. At the reception they gave me a key and asked me to go to another apartment next to the hotel! I went there, opened the front door with my key, walked up the narrow stairs with my luggage listening to voices and a barking dog from other flats in the building. I don't know if these were other hotel guests or just people living in this apartment. It looks like these "clever" people are buying flats in the street and adding them to their "hotel". As expected from such a building the room looked like nothing has been changed or renovated since 60s. Everything in the room (the floor, tabs, telephone, light switches, TV, remote control, etc.) has years of dirt on them which you can't remove by cleaning anymore. Paints are coming off here and there, you see holes on the walls and around some pipes, especially in the toilet.
In the morning I talked to my colleagues and none of them was happy. In the main hotel (the apartment with the reception) there was a party in the lobby so the guys in the upper floor couldn't sleep until they complained at 2:00 in the morning and stopped the party. By the way the "lobby" is just the entrance of the apartment. I wonder how they are renting that place for a party! Aren't there any noise or safety regulations?
During my two-day visit I didn't see anyone in the "hotel" except the woman at the reception who is collecting money and delivering keys and giving you directions to go to your room. In the breakfast they had ran out of tea bags, spoons and knives and each time I had to go to the kitchen to find someone to get these items.
When I complained about these things during check-out, the lady at the reception did not even look at my face. She kept looking at her screen, said there was nothing wrong with their hotel, printed the invoice and rudely asked me to pay it.
Well, I stayed in bad places all over the world and never complained about anything, simply because that was the deal and I got what I paid for. But that's not the case at the Chelton.
These people are claiming that this is a 4* hotel (yes four star) and they are selling this bed and breakfast for 115 Euros per night per person!! That is 150 US Dollars. Can you believe it?
They even put a photo of a fitness facility in one of the web sites. Look at that picture carefully. It's the same two machines as you have in your bathroom placed in a run down room and they are selling it as a "fitness facility" in a 4* hotel! This hotel is apparently cheating its customers.
I don't recommend the Chelton to anyone.
