I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in June 08 while I was spending 6 days horse riding in Cappadokia (highly recommended, the best way to see this weird and wonderful place.) This is a lovely hotel, the rooms are well appointed, the central courtyard and the rooftop tables provide great public spaces. The breakfasts and dinners were really excellent. There are a couple of tortoise and a very sweet cat that come by at breakfast. It is an easy walk down the hill to the little town. The prices in Urgup are better than Goreme if you want to buy ceramics. Wine is VERY expensive if you are spending US dollars.

First, I have to say that the pictures on the website don't do the Selcuklu Evi (pronounced Sell-Chuk-Loo) justice. It's five Selcuk houses that have been completely refurbished and connected via stone stair cases round a secluded central courtyard.
It's near the top of the hill in the town of Urgup, which is a great centre from which to explore the Cappadocia region. There's a bit of schlep up the hill from the centre of town to get to the hotel, but if you don't fancy it, a cab is usually very inexpensive.
From the hotel's top terrace you get a create panorama of the town of Urgup and the valley below, with the added bonus of the deserted cave houses above the town flanking the back of the hotel. Take a five minute wonder up the road and you're in a strange landscape of derelict, deserted houses built into the side of the hill. It looks like people have only recently moved out, some of the buildings still have shelves on the wall.
The rooms in the hotel are lovely, and have been very carefull restored by local craftsmen using original materials. Our room (Terasli Oda) had a dark wooden floor, wooden beams on the ceiling and white stone walls, an antique-looking wrought iron bed and my favourite, a bakelite telephone which worked. It also has a door through to a private terrace which overlooks both the secluded garden and the square outside the hotel. N.B. At weekends it can get a bit noisy during the day - although you're likely to be out gallavanting - because one of Turkey's soap operas is filmed round the corner. Set tours are conducted at the weekends, and the entrance is quite near the hotel.
The detail in the rooms is fantastic. The light fittings are surrounded by carved holders extending from the bricks. Nooks and crannies are filled with local artefacts, and everything fits together beautifully. The same care has been taken with the library - an original cave room with lots of books in a plethora of different languages.
Breakfast was lovely. It's buffet-style, which is very common in Turkey and alongside the usual toast, butter, jams, etc. you'll also find delicious local tomatoes, cucumbers, cheeses. You can also get freshly-cooked eggs and they have a lady in traditional garb that will rustle you up a blue-cheese or potato pancake. On the first night we arrived on the late flight into Kayseri (the closest local town), so we missed breakfast the following morning. Even though the waiting staff had cleared down the restaurant they were more than happy to sort us out with a cup of coffee and a plate with a slection of goodies. After a long flight, it was great to get such good service.
The first night we also had dinner in the hotel, and was very pleasantly surprised. We didn't quite know what to make of it and peaked a little early by over-indulding in the buffet starter - don't get caught out - there's plenty to eat. Nice nosh, freshly prepared and very tasty. There's quite a few decent restaurants in the locality (Alaturka in nearby Goreme and Somine in Urgup were both good), so you may want to venture out.
As with most hotels in Turkey, you will be urged to try the hotel tours, look round the local carpet shop, etc. and this hotel was no different. We did take one tour, which was good - if quite long - but opted to do our own thing the remainder of the time.
Lastly, I'd like to say thanks to Halil, the owner and definitely a mover and shaker (he also owns the Hotel Surban next door) and his team who looked after us very well. I suspect we weren't the easiest of guests and they really went out of their way to help, even picking us up from the airport 60km at 2am on our arrival.
In a word - excellent. I'd recommend this place both to my parents and also to younger friends.
