Smelly rooms...
Guest name: Durham_Beach_Bums, Durham
The room was clean enough, the bedding was old and stained. Not a big deal if you take it off right away. The biggest distraction was the smell. Kind of cross between smoke and mold. BTW
- it was a non-smoking room. On the positive side, the shower pressure was great.
OK for $52 per night

I stayed here for three nights and the only problem I had was being made to leave (or at least, move my car out) on the first morning by 8:30 a.m. They paved the back parking lot and luckily, I planned on being gone the whole day anyway. After that, it smelled of asphalt!
Staff members were very friendly, and in fact I got a phone call the first evening to welcome me and ask if I needed anything. Everything worked fine in the room, except for the wi-fi - it was very sporadic. The room was clean and comfortable, and it wasn't noisy at all. One other fault: while taking a shower, I got alternately scalded & frozen - I guess our water source was shared with someone else who either flushed a toilet or ran water. Yowch!
I read the earlier reviews about the "men hanging around" and have a comment about that. I'm more wary than most, being in law enforcement and living in a place with REALLY bad crime/gang problems. I saw "men on the balconies" and yes, they did watch me drive in with my adult daughter. However, these were simply workmen who start their day at 4:30-5:00 a.m. (I know because I was up that early on my third day, to depart). They probably get off work early as well, and have nothing in particular to do but hang out.
I guess if you're thinking that everyone staying at a motel should be a tourist, you might be afraid. I wasn't.
I would stay here again, given the circumstances and my limited funds. Overall, it was a satisfactory motel for $52 a night - I would not pay more.

Like most reviewers have already stated the parking lot was full of hoods loitering about so we felt compelled to unload the entire contents of the car and take it all with us to the room unfortunately the surroundings made it uncomfortable to leave our things unattended in the room so we had to load it all back up when we went out to eat. The last straw was when a walk across the carpet in our room turned the bottom of my white socks filthy black. We couldn’t stay the night there. I could not get my money back for the first night it was worth it not have to sleep there. We found a much better place down the road for only slightly more money.

The staff was very friendly, all of them. The rooms are old but okay. There is a fridge in the room and the bathtub was clean. There are a lot of people walking around but no one looked shady. Just college kids. It was fine for the one night we needed it and had no problems.
