Good location for visiting the old heart of Montevideo - overlooking the river plate. ( Only hotel to do so)
Basicially a businessman's hotel but clean and function and with excellent breakfast.

I had been to Montevideo before and stayed at a large American Chain hotel (check my profile to read about it).. It was the most awful experience I have had abroad. And then by chance a local friend in Uruguay asked why I didn't stay here at the NH Columbia. It made my whole 10 days in the city a completely wonderful experience. Its sad to say that it takes a hotel to do it, but this one delivers. Ask for a room on a high floor facing the Rio Del Plata. Every day I rose to a dark stormy winter sky with fingers of sunlight streaming into the river (feels like a sea as you dont see the other side). Staff was friendly (speaking spanish helps but even with English they worked it out in the end), As a long stay traveler some times you just want some thing decent to eat at an odd hour. And while not outstanding .. everything I had was what I ordered and tasted fine. The location is good .. the clubs aren't far. and there is a wonderful market near selling all sorts of antiques and crafts .. from old silver napkin rings to jewelry.. to old Paintings as well as hip young kids work. Montevideo is hard to know where to go .. Get to know some locals on line and find out where they go. People are friendly and trust worthy so dont be shy .. I love it there and I plan to go back again this August. I had had a so so experience at the Raddison/Sheraton that I didnt want to repeat .. and at NH columbia .. I didnt have to. And that View every day .. really made my trip

Bargain price, pretty hotel that will improve after current renovations. Opt for a superior room for a view of the river. Outstanding breakfast. Location didn't encourage walking at night; but daytime close to the old city and museums

The only thing good about this hotel is the wonderfull view to the sea, but the quality that you find normally in NH chain, you will not find it in this hotel. We stayed 16 paxs in 8 rooms , members all of a small family group, from December 29 until January 02, 2007. Most of the time the only one elevator that was running was not working, in check out we had to help employees down the stairs from the 5th floor. In the Hotel Restaurant ran out of some types of food, when most of the city restaurants were close on new years eve. In the Hotels rooms you could see scrachtes in the walls from luggage and 5 of the 8 rooms we had the air condition was not cooling. This back of the hotel is not a nice area , I would not recommend this area for walking.
