We stayed at the Silversmith over the week-end of Chicago Blues Festival and before embarking on Route 66. We arrived at O'Hare and at the suggestion of others on TA took the public transport option, easy access at airport, journey was swift and cheap, with just one change at Clarke and Lake, the train stopped at Madison and Wabash which is just about outside the doors of Hotel, slight difficulty in bumping suitcases down the wooden stairs but not a real problem.
Check in was swift and efficient, room located on seventh floor. Room was spacious, v. well decorated and spotlessly clean. Bed linen, towels and robes were of excellent quality. The 'fridge was a useful addition to the room for keeping drinks cool, store for soft drinks, beer, wine and snacks just across the street.
The deli which is attached to Hotel was convenient for dinner on our first night, good selection of American cuisine at a v. reasonable price. There are a selection of restaurants in the immediate vicinity from steaks to burgers to pizzas.
Despite ongoing work around Hotel and the train line just outside we weren't disturbed by any noise what so ever, you may just hear a swoosh! in the distance as the train approaches, which probably wouldn't wake the lightest sleeper.
Alltogether a very good option for a Hotel in Chicago, close to Grant Park and all City centre attractions, we would definately stay there again.

We enjoyed our stay. We had a king suite. The extra room, with the sitting area was nice after a long day of walking in Chicago.
Location was excellent. We rode the El in from O'hare, take the blue to green and you get off a stones throw away from the entrance. If you do take the El, there are no elevators at that stop so luggage might be a problem for some. The El tracks were outside our window, but the noise was not too bad. The complimentary desserts at night were excellent. We booked our trip through priceline, no problems we stayed for eight nights.

If you want a downtown hotel in Chicago and not go completely broke this is probably the place for you. It is literally a block away from Millennium Park and just a few blocks down Michigan Ave. from the Magnificent Mile.
My group made the mistake of booking through Expedia, so we were not guaranteed to receive the two double beds we needed. All they had was a room with a king bed, but they gave us a roll-away without charge.
The hotel is in a rather shady part of town (right under the L-train), however, the hotel is very secure and we did feel safe there. As other reviews on this site have indicated, the L-train is right outside the front of the hotel. They informed me that one way to avoid being booked by the L is to request a room with two double beds. All of those rooms are on the opposite side of the hotel from the L. Our room was off to the side, so we could hear the L, but honestly it sounded more like a quiet rain storm. We actually didn't mind it.
The staff is a bit stone faced, but once you engage them they open up and are very nice. Maybe that's just a Chicago thing!
Very nice hotel. If you are looking for a hotel downtown that is lower on the continuum for downtown hotels, than this is a great place.

I chose this property because of its downtown loop location. I wanted to be within walking distance to The Art Institute and the Harris Theater. I was only staying in town for a couple nights and was not trying to see it all! My room was very large, well furnished, clean and quiet. In spite of it being right under the El train; my room was very quiet - I had a view of a brick wall but it was quiet. All in all, I would stay there again. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom is really spacious!

This was the second time my husband and I stayed at the Silversmith, and we will continue to stay here, as long as the hotels standards are maintained to the present high level,
the location is wonderful and the rooms are spotless and very comfortable, and decorated in neutral tones which is very relaxing, just what is needed after a long day shopping and sight seeing, only one slight snag on our second stay, we were given a room Instead of the suite I had booked, but this was swiftly corrected, this hotel is excellent value for money and I would not hesitate in recommending it to anyone.
We would recommend the Beef and Brandy restuarant for breakfast which is only a block away on State St, plently of choices and friendly service, also Millers bar is only a few minutes walk down the street and has a olde world atmosphere, a great menu, great staff, and a great reputation so richly deserved, its also very reasonable and with large potions. If you are about to holiday in Chicago, we envy you, we cannot wait to return to this great city.
